Copycat recipes are so much fun, especially when they keep you on your health journey! This Bloomin’ Onion Chaffle with sauce will not disappoint, Outback fans!
In recent recipe posts from me, you may have seen a common theme: Low Carb. Yes, I’m one of those people. It’s necessary and it’s working out quite well for me. But I admit there are things that I miss. Bread, for one. There’s just no good substitute for it–none that I’ve found anyway. But I’m always on the lookout.
Recently I’ve been making a lot of chaffles. What are those? Well, they are basically cheese waffles. You use pre-shredded mozzarella (or cheddar, but I use mozz more often) in a mini waffle iron. There are tons of variations on them. One of my recent favorites is adding chopped onion, which provides you with an onion rings substitute. Very tasty!
But this got me thinking about the delicious Outback Bloomin’ Onion. Man, I miss that thing. So good! Hmmm…could I duplicate that?
YES!! The answer is a resounding yes!! Husband and I have been having these almost daily for the last few weeks and we have yet to grow tired of them. They are soooooo good, y’all! You’re welcome in advance. If you want to check out a short reel of this from my business Instagram, you can view it here.
The Seasoning Mix
Okay, so I messed with this till I got it just right. Finding another recipe and tweaking it helped tremendously. I was then able to make a large enough mix amount so that you can just batch this up in advance and have it on hand. These Bloomin’ Onion Chaffles go together fast this way. Trust me. Make the seasoning mix and keep it nearby!
The Sauce
The Bloomin’ Onion Chaffles are good, yes, but they are not complete without that SAUCE!! You gotta make the sauce. But don’t worry; I got you.
The Method
So here’s what I recommend:
Make the seasoning up. Make the sauce up (it’ll last for 4 or 5 batches chaffles, depending on how much you like to have on your chaffle). Chop an onion and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge. That’s all the prep.
Now, when you’re ready to make your Bloomin’ Onion Chaffle, grab a small bowl (I use a cereal bowl). Add in your cheese (pre-shredded seems to work the best), your seasoning, and your onion. Toss to coat. Then add half of that mix to your preheated mini waffle iron and cook. That’s it. When it’s done, lift it out with a fork and let it cool and crisp up a bit. Then dip in your sauce and enjoy paradise!
It’s that easy!

Ingredients
- Seasoning:
- 1 Tbsp. paprika
- 1 Tbsp. ground cumin
- 1 Tbsp. dried oregano
- 1 Tbsp. dried thyme
- 2 Tbsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. cayenne pepper
- 1 Tbsp. ground black pepper
- 1 Tbsp. garlic powder
- Sauce:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 6 Tbsp. sour cream
- 6 Tbsp. prepared horseradish sauce
- 3 Tbsp. no sugar added ketchup
- 3/4 tsp. paprika
- 3/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- The Chaffles (makes two)
- 3/4 cup preshredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- 3/4 tsp. seasoning mix
Directions
- Step 1
- Prepare the seasoning mix and keep in an airtight container in the pantry till ready to use.
- Step 2
- Prepare the sauce and keep in a covered container in the fridge till ready to use.
- Step 3
- Tip: chop up an onion and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge so you can easily pull together the ingredients.
- Step 4
- To make two chaffles, combine the 3/4 cup cheese, 1/4 cup chopped onion, and 3/4 tsp. seasoning in a small bowl and toss well to evenly combine.
- Step 5
- Take half of this mixture and pile it onto the center of your preheated mini waffle iron. Gently close and allow to cook until the waffle iron top lifts off easily and the “crust” is a deep golden brown.
- Step 6
- Using a fork, go around the edge gently lifting up the chaffle. It should lift up easily. If it starts to stretch and come apart, it needs to cook longer.
- Step 7
- Remove the chaffle to a plate and let it cool a little. It will crisp up as it cools.
- Step 8
- Serve with sauce.
